Patsy Cline
Introduction

Patsy Cline recorded transcription discs for the armed forces. The format of each program varied according to its sponsor (U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, Air Force or Marine Corps). Patsy first appeared as a guest and later hosted these shows. Discs were pressed and sent to thousands of stations for broadcast across the United States and its overseas territories.

Chatter is often heard between songs, and the broadcasts include ads and recruitment bulletins. The performances feature relaxed arrangements, and maintain artistic quality without the refinements of a commercial recording session. To simulate a live event, canned applause was spliced into some shows, although musicians would applaud on others. As with personal appearances, Patsy could sing anything on these programs, since the recordings were not made for commercial sale and therefore not subject to contract restrictions that were typically imposed on artists by their record labels.

These shows were originally recorded onto master tape in a studio, complete with take slates and breakdowns, although most tapes were reused after lacquers were cut and discs were pressed. The discs were to be destroyed after broadcast, since they were intended for airplay within a specific time frame only. Copies persist, however, and continue to be traded among record collectors.
