Nat King Cole
Introduction

This section documents Cole's guest performances on live radio. Included here are appearances on programs such as Chesterfield Supper Club and Kraft Music Hall, as well as the King Cole Trio's numerous guest spots for the Armed Forces Radio Service, most notably Jubilee. Also included are recorded spots used as radio commercials.

Note: this listing only includes known extant radio performances, and the songs performed are documented. It does not attempt to chronicle all of Cole's appearances on radio. (Photo: appearing on Kraft Music Hall with Bing Crosby, Spring 1945.)

a. rt Lord, I Give You My Children(Bernie Hanighen, Johnny Mercer)
unissued

The trio appeared on the weekly NBC program Swing Soiree from January to April of 1939. On page 115 of Goodbye: In Search Of Gordon Jenkins, Bruce Jenkins' biography of his father, the existence of "a scratchy but riveting 78" purportedly stems from one of these broadcasts. This particular number was "designed to introduce the members of the band", and Cole plays a brief solo following his intro. Jenkins does not mention wether Moore and Prince were also featured, and we have not heard the disc to confirm.

Dates

August 11, 1943 is the date traditionally assigned to this performance and the rest of the contents of AFRS Personal Album 227. Roy Holmes had in his collection this disc with that date typed on the label, which Teubig presumably used when dating this session.

Of the five trio performances appearing on Personal Album 227, all but one are known to be reused from various Jubilee broadcasts throughout 1943. The origins of "Straighten Up And Fly Right" are less clear. The Jubilee broadcast of February 7, 1943, the contents of which are currently unknown, would be a possibility, but it's believed that the Cole would not compose the song until the following month.

Comparing the introduction of this performance with that of the Jubilee broadcast of November 8, 1943 raises further questions about the date of this recording. The Personal Album intro is very similar to the Capitol recording of November 30, 1943. Oddly, the intro on the November 8, 1943 recording is quite different from the Capitol recording 22 days later. One might reasonably assume, then, that the November 8th version preceded the August 11 recording, and the trio then reworked the intro for the latter and Capitol performances.

Despite the above, until more evidence to the contrary surfaces, August 11th will be the date reported here.

Contrary to Teubig, who lists it as a unique recording (Feb 1, 1945), this recording of "The Man On The Little White Keys" was reused for AFRS 'Mail Call 132'. This means, also, that the version heard on the Giants of Jazz LP The Forgotten Years uses this recording, since that LP is sourced from 'Mail Call 132'.

Very Special Records (UK) CDVSR 002 — Live In Vegas 1962   (2013)

This session for Rheingold features several short radio spots played to the tune of Cole Porter's "Let's Do It". Rheingold radio and television supervisor Thomas McDonald, who is mentioned on the tape by Dave Cavanaugh, penned the new lyrics.

In addition to this session for Rheingold, at least one additional Cole radio spot for the beer company exists and can be found on the Coast To Coast Live CD on the Ovation label. Likely from this same period as the above session, the performance features Cole, accompanied by his usual rhythm section, doing a Rheingold jingle to the tune of "Little Girl" and the main Rheingold theme, which was based on the Estudiantina waltz. Lyrics for both the main theme and the "Little Girl" adaptation were possibly also the work of Thomas McDonald.

Cavanaugh incorrectly slates the fourth take of Spot 5, calling for Take 3 again.
