Nat King Cole
Introduction

This page contains all known live, on-stage recordings of Nat Cole; the body of work represented here spans 23 years of Cole's career. (Photo: on stage in Paris, April 1960. Photograph by Susanne Schapowalow.)

Date: July 10, 1941
Location: Monroe's Uptown House, 198 West 134th Street, New York

Nat Cole (p), John Simmons (b), Walter Green (d)

a. live I Surrender, Dear(Harry Barris, Gordon Clifford) - 7:46

From mid-June 1941 until late March 1942, the King Cole Trio was likely to be found at Kelly's Stables in New York. Despite their extended stay in the city, and the numerous live recordings of other artists that have emerged over the years, the trio's commercial sides for Decca on July 16th and October 22nd, respectively, have long been the only extant recordings of Cole’s time in New York.

This recently discovered performance of "I Surrender, Dear", recorded by Jerry Newman at Monroe's Uptown House in Harlem less than a week before the trio's first New York session for Decca, captures Cole in a setting unlike any we are accustomed to finding him.

Strictly instrumental and with neither Moore nor Prince in attendance, Cole stretches out for more than seven minutes of piano, joined by the otherwise unknown Walter Green on drums and John Simmons on bass (who would reunite with Cole on the 1945 Sunset session). Simmons and Cole had an interesting friendship during this time in New York, details of which the bassist would recount to Pat Willard in a 1976 interview.

Special thanks to discographer Jan Evensmo for sharing the audio of this track and the story behind his discovery of this truly one-of-a-kind recording.

Dates

The date for this on-location broadcast (Mutual Broadcasting System) is approximate. The King Cole Trio played two lengthy engagements at the 331 Club. First, from June 1942 to early March of 1943, then again from May 1943 to April 1944. Teubig dates this performance as circa 1942-43, while Holmes says it's from January 1943. As there is no proof for any specific date at present, this discography reports the date range.

Songs

Teubig incorrectly places "The Man On The Little White Keys" from this date.

Neither "I'm Through With Love" nor "Nice Work If You Can Get It" can be dated definitively. The former is almost certainly from this run at the Trocadero, while the latter may or may not be from the Trocadero, but is generally believed to be from this time period.

Composers

Most discographies credit Pinky Tomlin and Charles Tobias with composing "The Trouble With Me Is You". That is a different tune, however, than what was performed here.

Nat Cole (v) on a-f, h-l.

Cole and his group appeared at the Blue Note in Chicago from August 28th to September 6th, 1953. The contract called for three shows per night, four on Saturday, a Sunday matinee, with August 31st and September 1st being off days. At least four days were recorded by the club's owner, Frank Holzfeind.

The performances listed appear exactly as they do on the nine tapes from the four days of recording. Despite our best effort to document each set as accurately as possible, there are many factors complicating this. For instance, on the four days in question Cole and his group were contracted to play a total of 13 shows, but "Route 66", as one example, appears a total of 16 times. In an effort to never repeat a performance during any given show, some dates have many more shows listed than Cole would have played on that particular evening. This would indicate that the dates, as written on the tapes, are possibly mislabeled in places. But until the record can be sorted out further, these performances will be listed as above.

Personnel

Quincy Jones' rhythm section of Les Spann (g), Buddy Catlett (b), Joe Harris (d), and Patti Brown (p), were all substituted out during Cole's portion of the concert. Brown was the only exception, remaining on to play piano on those numbers where Cole did not accompany himself.

While it is reasonable to assume that Jerome Richardson doubled and Les Spann played flute on a few numbers, it's not known if other members of the sax section also doubled.

Performances b-c feature a small string section, probably five pieces, that augmented the Jones band.

Personnel

As was done in Paris, Quincy Jones's rhythm section were substituted out during Cole's portion of the concert. Patti Bown was the only exception, remaining on to play piano for the numbers where Cole did not accompany himself.

While it is reasonable to assume that Jerome Richardson doubled and Les Spann played flute on a few numbers, it isn't known if other members of the sax section also doubled.

The 'others unknown' accompaniment on "Unforgettable" refers to a small string section, probably five pieces, that augmented the Jones band.

Cole performed in Manila from May 24-27, 1961. This performance comes from one of those four nights. Personnel

The arrangement of "Get Me To The Church On Time" is a slightly scaled down club arrangement of Ralph Carmichael's score for the My Fair Lady album. The arrangement exists at the Schomburg Library in New York, but the finding aid does not list who produced the club arrangement, although it may have been Carmichael himself.

Similarly, Cole's live arrangement of "When I Fall In Love" is heavily indebted to Gordon Jenkins' 1956 chart, though it isn't known with any certainty who is responsible for adapting the earlier arrangement.
