Cole died before he could record Capitol versions of songs from the film Cat Ballou. Because of this, producer Lee Gillette used the vocals from the soundtrack recordings Cole made for Columbia in September 1964. One month after Cole's death, Ralph Carmichael arranged and conducted the backing tracks that were combined with Cole's earlier vocals.

This was a split session with trumpeter Bobby Bryant, whose trumpet solos can also be heard in Cole's final album, L-O-V-E.
