Nat King Cole
Introduction

Though these years mark the end of his career and life, the final four-year stretch represents a particularly rewarding—and varied—chapter of Cole's recorded output. Some of his best remembered singles come from this period ("Ramblin' Rose", "Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer", "L-O-V-E"), further forays into foreign language recordings, plus a handful of classic albums reveal that Nat Cole was, after more than a quarter of a century in the public eye, an artist still very much at his artistic and commercial peak. Personnel

A voice other than Lee Gillette’s calls out the slate on the alternate of "Straighten Up And Fly Right". It is not known if this is some other Capitol producer or perhaps the engineer. In a 2014 interview, Capitol engineer Irv Joel claimed to have done a session or two with Cole’s trio, which means he could have engineered this session. However, it is highly unlikely that the voice is his.

Transcribed Arrangements

While this project did not commission any new arrangements and relied instead on the original scores, in some instances the originals were not able to be located and a new transcription arrangement was made, often by local New York writers. Where known, these transcription arrangements will be listed in the notes for each session. It appears that Hank Sylvern may have contributed such an arrangement for "Pretend".

Alternate Takes

The original master take of "Unforgettable" is listed here as 16+. Producer Lee Gillette was not entirely satisfied with Cole’s recording, so he had him overdub a new vocal, one that used the Take 16 backing track. The overdubbed vocal was slated by Gillette as 'Take 2'.

Take 7 of "The Christmas Song" is the only take in which the piano solo is missing. There's also an indicator that they were doing intercuts to be spliced in when they'd tackle cleanup issues and fixes, and not overdubs. Notes indicate they used Take 16 and a 'Take 16 Intercut 1' to create a final stereo mix. It is not known when Cole overdubbed his piano solo, but it likely occurred within the next few days when he was still recording in New York.

Composers

Let True Love Begin” was credited to Barkan, Baron, and George Eddy. Eddy was a pseudonym of George Paxton.

Alternate Takes

The master of take (Take 7) of “Let True Love Begin” does not include the vocal chorus. When the song was released as a single, a chorus was overdubbed onto the master. When the song was later issued with instrumental overdubs following Cole’s death, Capitol went back to Take 7 without the chorus.

Acetates of the alternate takes of “Let True Love Begin”, takes 16 & 23, are known to exist, though I have not heard them.

Personnel

I have a note in my files that says that Ralph Carmichael may have conducted “I Heard You Cried Last Night.” According the to the original score itself, Wess arranged but Carmichael perhaps conducted. I have heard some session chatter for “Let True Love Begin” and Carmichael is not conducting, so it makes sense that Wess would conduct the entire session.

Take Numbers and Overdubs

A rare stereo session recorded directly on two-track instead of three-track master tape, this remake of “Orange Colored Sky” also included overdubbed vocals from the Kenton band (“flash, bam, alakazam!”).

Cole and the orchestra recorded twelve takes with Take 10 selected as the master underdog. Three band vocal takes were attempted, and these were designated on the original tape reel as takes 13-15. Take 15 was selected and combined with Take 10 to create a master that was used on the original release of The Nat King Cole Story and most subsequent reissues. When this track was issued by Analogue Productions, engineer Steve Hoffman used band overdub take 13 instead of 15, citing tape wear on the latter.

In keeping with Capitol’s typical tradition for designating overdubbed takes, I have opted to call Takes 13-15 as Takes 1B-3B instead.

Personnel

Saxophonist and arranger Lennie Niehaus told me in 2006 he remembered conducting this session for Cole. While Niehaus participated in the 1960 session with Cole & Kenton and also arranged some material for Cole’s live act around the same time, I have never been able to confirm if he actually conducted on this date.

It is also likely that one of the tenors listed played alto instead.

Personnel

Calypso Blues” features Cole and Mike Pacheco (congas) only. In a 2006 interview, Pacheco told me that was the only number he played on during the session.

Take Numbers

Take numbers for all selections from this session are taken from a lo-rez photo of the original 3-track tape boxes, and as such are not clearly distinguishable in several instances.

For “Blue Gardenia”, it appears that Take 1 was used, but there is also a very prominent note indicating that it’s been edited by engineer John Kraus, possibly pieced with Take 3.

Splice

The 2006 Bear Family set L-O-V-E featured a take of “Step Right Up” that was slightly different than the original 45 release. On the Bear Family version, Cole at one point sings “stand right up” rather than “step right up” as heard on the original issue. I suspect that the original 45 intercut this portion (possibly using takes 2 & 14).

“There Is A Tavern In The Town”: Cole/Brgdahl

a. demo Once Upon A Time - 2:00(Vic Lewis)
unissued

Recorded during Cole's UK tour of July 1963, this recording was first documented by discographer Roy Holmes. A private pressing (possibly from Holmes' personal collection) can be seen on Discogs. Although this is not a Capitol recording, it stems from a studio session and is therefore included on a studio page, rather than being orphaned elsewhere.

Location

From September 9-29, 1963, Cole was performing at The Latin Casino, just east of Philadelphia in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, as part of his Sights & Sounds tour. Premiering in Los Angeles in August, the tour would keep Cole and company on the road, mostly in the northeast and midwest, until early December. Since Cole was working in the evening, these sessions most likely took place from around 1pm - 4pm, which was fairly standard for him.

It has never been revealed exactly why Lee Gillette chose to have Nat record the album in Philadelphia. Cole recorded extensively at Capitol’s New York studio, and this album could just as easily have been done there instead of in a ballroom in Philadelphia, albeit one that was often used by The Philadelphia Orchestra during their own recording sessions.

There has been a little confusion about where precisely this album was recorded. In his autobiography, Ralph Carmichael indicated that it was held at the Philadelphia Athletic Club, while Louise Stuart Davis, a Philadelphia native and background singer on the album, told me in an interview that it was held at the Broadwood Hotel. The Broadwood Hotel was then listed in the Bear Family discography as the location for these sessions. Turns out, everyone is correct. The Broadwood Hotel became the Philadelphia Athletic Club around 1962.

Personnel

The personnel listed for the four My Fair Lady sessions is based primarily on interviews with various session participants. Interviewees include: Ralph Carmichael; Frank Hunter; Billie Barnum; Walt Stuart; Louise Stuart Davis; Clyde Reasinger; David Arben; Jerry Wigler

Arben and Wigler were both violinists with The Philadelphia Orchestra. While neither man could remember any other orchestra members that participated in these sessions, it is believed that the string section, woodwinds, and French horns were comprised of musicians from the Philadelphia Orchestra. The remaining session players are either Cole’s personal musicians or New York session musicians who made the short trip down for the dates.

Merry Young Souls Personnel

The composition of the Merry Young Souls was most likely the same as the My Fair Lady album from September 1963 or very similar. Any differences like result from the following: By spring 1964, Edith Gay Webb had been replaced by Jean Sewell and Bob Allen was replaced by John Stannard. See the September 1963 sessions for more details.

While the MYS received label credit on 45 releases from this session, member Billie Barnum did not remember them participating on this date.

Personnel

Instrumentation for the sax section is presented here according to how it is listed on the AFM session contract. Without being able to examine the scores for each song, it is difficult to determine exactly who was playing what on each song, therefore the collective instrumentation is listed here.

Running Times

The AFM session contract lists the running time of "L-O-V-E" as only 1:50. Two acetates, one from late July the other from August 18, also list the running time as 1:50; the latter, though, does indicate that this is an 'edited version'.

Location

Capitol files indicate that Cole overdubbed his vocals in Las Vegas in August. If so, Bill Putnam’s United Recording (URCON), located at 3143 Industrial Road, is the most likely location for this session. However, there exist a series of photographs of Nat at the microphone in Capitol Studio A, which, at the very least, cast doubt on where this session was held.

In the photos, Cole is studying a piece of music at his vocal microphone and next to him is a young woman, possibly German, who appears to be giving him some pointers. Visible in her hand is the sheet music to “Mutterlein”, which was one of the vocal overdubs Cole recorded on August 18, 1964. These images may be from an earlier run-through prior to the overdubs done in Las Vegas, or they may be an indication that the overdubs were done in Los Angeles after all.

Overdubs

Cole recorded his vocals on top of pre-recorded orchestral tracks. All versions of “L-O-V-E” come from June 3, 1964, while “Mutterlein” uses the backing track of “Answer Me, My Love” from March 24, 1961 as well as a chorus of Cole’s English-language vocal from that same date.

Overdubs

Cole apparently overdubbed his vocals later in Las Vegas. If true, this likely would be during Cole’s last appearance at the Sands, November 1-22.

I spoke with accordionist Carl Fortina about this and the following session, and he clearly recalled Cole being in the studio for this session. Cole may have attempted the vocals and then overdubbed the final versions of all/some of the tunes later in Vegas.

Timings

Timings listed on AFM contract do not match released recordings

Recording Order

AFM sheet lists “Les Feuilles Mortes” as the third song recorded, after “Kareha” and "Tu Eres Tan Amable".

Personnel

Three guitarists are present, but Almeida likely only played on the one song. Can’t be sure if the others are also present on Almeida’s song.

AFM lists Dale Anderson, drummer Irv Cottler, and accordionist Carl Fortina as all playing Latin percussion at times.

Songs

Capitol files indicate that “More” was the first song recorded at this session but was rejected and remade the following afternoon. This is supported by the song’s master number, 53090. “More” is not listed on the AFM contract of 12/1/64.

Personnel

This album features a mixture of Cole’s own musicians, local San Francisco musicians, and LA-based studio musicians who were brought in for these sessions.

Songs

Michel Ruppli, in his Capitol Label Discography, lists the remake of “More” as the first song recorded at this session. I can not confirm this, and the song once again is omitted from the AFM contract.

The AFM contract does list “The Girl From Ipanema” as the last song recorded at this session, but this song was most likely recorded the following day.

Personnel

George Butterfield is listed on the AFM contract as only participating for three hours.

Dates

The AFM contract lists “More” as being the first song recorded at this session, but this is in error. “More” was recorded the previous day.

The AFM contract also omits “The Girl From Ipanema”, placing it instead as the last song recorded the previous day.

Composers

The 1965 UK single of “No Other Heart” listed Dave Lee and Herbert Kretzmer as composers. Lee and Kretzmer are also listed as the composers in the 1965 Catalog of Copyright Entries (the song was registered on February 4). However, when the song was first issued in the US on the 1967 LP Sincerely, Lee was replaced by George David Weiss, which was repeated on the 1992 CD edition. However, I have opted to follow the original listing and have omitted Weiss.

Personnel

For this, and all three San Francisco sessions, three guitarists are listed, though it is most likely that three guitarists are not present at all times. Therefore, they will be listed collectively until it can be determined who played on which tunes.
